Tallaght Community Arts presents Drawing on the Body an exhibition of new works by artist Bernie Masterson.

This work originated as a collaborative effort between the artist and her mother as a means of relating her body to the natural landscape.

There is a two step approach to the work.

An initial collection of oil drawings deals primarily with the surface of the skin and its evolution over the years in a series of abstract and semi –abstract drawings.

The second part of the series meldes the structural elements of her mother’s medical record with the memories evoked by photographic media documenting landmarks in her life.

The combined effect of the collection forms a narrative that gives visual expression to an inner life, becoming effectively a biography in paint.

Drawing on the Body records a variety of aspects of the aging human body: the palm, the knuckles, the feet, sagging breasts, a series of age marks, a protruding stitched scar in the shoulder – it sounds depressing but the results are beautiful. Maebh O’Regan arts critic
