TCA PRESENTS ‘DANCING BETWEEN WORLDS’

27/06/2009

Tallaght Community Arts (TCA) is delighted to present Dancing Between Worlds, a photographic exhibition arising from a creative project between the Glenasmole community, percussionist/composer Siobhán Daffy, dance artist Cindy Cummings and photographer Martin Dunne. Dancing Between Worlds will be on exhibition at RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre from June 10-27, 2009.

Dancing Between Worlds is the second part of an extended project ‘Oíche Shamhna’, which took place from August-October 2008 in Glenasmole with the members of the Venture Club, a Friday night social club for young people (aged 4-16).

Siobhan (who lives in the Glenasmole area) and Cindy (an American living in Ireland for many years) led the local young people on a series of rhythm and dance workshops and expeditions to explore the physical landscape, the stories, local myths & folklore to create an original celebration, while also embracing tradition and community in the valley.

On Halloween night 2008, the wider community of Glenasmole valley came out in a procession through the darkness to watch the young people fill the night with song, dance and percussion, lit by candle and torchlight. Costumed by visual artist Michelle Phelan (and assisted by the young people and their parents), the performers led everyone back to the community centre where fireworks, a bonfire and food prepared by members of the community completed the celebration.

Throughout the process, local photographer Martin Dunne, along with Jack Cannon & Tracey Kearns from the Venture Club, documented the workshops and expeditions, and these photographs are now being exhibited to express the magical atmosphere of the ‘Oíche Shamhna’ project and the vibrancy of the Glenasmole community.
